  As a country with far- reaching development
needs and a high-level of solar
radiation, South Africa is strongly committed
to the use of solar energ y .
Our Government has a policy of promoting
access to sustainable energy service for especially
disadvantaged households, small business
and farms. There is there f o re a strong focus on
the application of small scale solar energy syst
ems .
We are engaged in a number of projects to
deliver solar energy driven facilities to industry,
urban and rural communities, public establishments
such as schools and clinics, as well as
agricultural and forestry undertakings.
We therefore fully support the World Solar Programme
in seeking to stimulate the implementation
of solar technologies at a global level.
The Programme will strengthen our own efforts
to improve the socio-economic position of especially
the poor; create jobs; reduce adverse
impacts by the energy sector on the physical
environment; and contribute towards the
development of a sustainable energy systems.
