Almost 90% of the population of our continent
has no access to commercial energy.
This is an unacceptable situation on
the eve of the third millennium. Fortunately,
thanks to the scientific advances and techniques
that now make it possible to exploit such new
and renewable sources of energy as biomass,
wind, water or sun, we have satisfactory solutions
at our disposal.
I fervently hope, in my capacity as President of
the African Solar Council, that the «spirit of
H a r a re» will never cease to inspire us, so that we
can win our struggle for energy self-suff iciency ,
which is a necessary step towards sustainable
development .
