Like many island countries, Jamaica strongly
supports the promotion of solar and
other forms of renewable energies to
ensure the economic and social development of
its people, especially those living in rural areas ,
who have no access to adequate energy supp
lies .
The Harare Declaration on Solar Energy and
Sustainable Development, approved by the
World Solar Summit held in September 1996
reflected the commitment of the international
community to work towards the wider use of
renewable and environmentally-friendly energies.
This commitment was later translated into
an action-oriented Programme by the World
Solar Commission. I am satisfied that the implementation
of the Programme is proceeding in a
satisfactory manner.
As a Member of the World Solar Commission, I
am pleased to be able to contribute to the task
of encouraging the world to devise policies and
strategies on the wider use of renewable energies
as an essential element of sustainable develo
pment .
