The world is in the midst of an energy
transition and is witnessing a surge of
environmentally benign energy sources .
The World Solar Commission can make a significant
contribution in facilitating this transition
and in achieving a sustainable future for
mankind .
India has one of the world’s largest renewable
energy programmes in the areas of both rural
energy and power generation. It is an active participant
in various international initiatives for the
p romotion of renewable energy. Under
UNESCO’s initiative, India has proposed a project
for developing a comprehensive training
p rogramme in renewable energy technologies
for trainees from developing countries. This will
go a long way in meeting the human resource
requirements in the renewable energy field.
Another initiative taken by us is Rural Electrification
based on renewable energy technologies.
This is in line with our national priority of providing
energy in rural areas, and may serve as a
model for other countries as well.
I believe that the World Solar Commission can
play a major role in promoting such initiatives.
India extends its support to the World Solar Programme 1996-2005.
