In the course of human civilization and social
development, the exploitation of renewable
e n e rgies has played an important ro l e .
Today when energy, environment and sustainable
development have become subjects of
universal interest, renewable energies are bringing
new hope to mankind in building an energy
system geared toward the future. To promote
the application of renewable energies, reduce
pollution and protect the ecological enviro nment
constitutes an undertaking which will
bring benefit to the whole of mankind and its
success depends on the joint efforts and broad
participation of the international community.
I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate
the full support of the Chinese Government to
the World Solar Programme 1996-2005 initiated
by UNESCO and wish the Programme a complete
success.
